The Ajo Plein Air Painters have invited us to a special paint out on Jan. 18-19. Join us at 11:30 a.m. in Ajo. Bring a lunch since we'll paint in the afternoon until 2:30 or so. If you can, stay overnight and catch the morning light in this scenic, historic copper mining town.
Ajo is about 2.5 hours west of Tucson and offers unique architectural and landscape subjects. January is a perfect time to visit.
Meet at Kinney Rd and Ajo at 8:45 a.m. on Jan. 18 to caravan. Gather at the Ajo Town Plaza at 11:30 a.m. We'll decide where to go then. There are many options! We'll paint until 2:30-3 or so. Bring a lunch. If you want to pick up a sandwich, you can do so at the grocery store there.
Some subject options include: Town Plaza, churches, mine pit, old museum building, historic Curley School, Darby Wells Road/Ajo Loop, Crater Range volcanic landscapes on the Barry Goldwater Bombing Range. Permits are needed for the Goldwater, but are free and can be obtained in Ajo. Might be a Thursday thing. Also possible: Organ Pipe Cactus National Park, Alamo Canyon. Take a look online to preview some of these interesting sites.
I've made my overnight reservations at the Sonoran Desert Inn and Conference Center: http://www.sonorancc.com/ .
Email me ASAP and let me know if you'll be there for the day or stay overnight. I can let the Ajo Painters know how many we are. If you want to carpool or share a room, let me know. I'll share contact info so you can arrange things to meet your needs.
